The Mereenie gas field, which has provided energy for the Northern Territory for three decades, has reached a new milestone.
The flow of natural gas from the West Mereenie 29 well in the Amadeus Basin has exceeded expectations, reaching six terajoules of natural gas a day – double what was expected before drilling.
The well is operated by Mereenie and its joint venture partners.
Sales of the gas to the Northern Territory market have already begun and the milestone was announced on the Australian Securities Exchange.
NT Chief Minister and Acting Minister for Mining and Energy, Lia Finocchiaro, emphasised the role of the energy sector in the Territory’s economy, especially in business growth and energy security and autonomy.
“Our government has promised to rebuild the Territory economy after eight long years of economic stagnation, mismanagement, and decline under the previous government,” Ms Finocchiaro said.
“The energy sector is crucial to our fulfilling this promise and forms the lifeblood of Territory businesses and heavy industry, with gas and associated royalties flowing from the Amadeus Basin in Central Australia and soon to flow from the Beetaloo Sub-basin, which we are unlocking after years of ideological inertia by Labor.”
Ms Finocchiaro also expressed excitement about the upcoming completion and eventual operations of the West Mereenie 30 well, expected in the next few months.
“I look forward to the continued development of the Mereenie gas field and wish Central Petroleum and their JV partners ongoing success as they contribute to the energy needs of the Territory and the broader Australian market,” she said.
