No Aphrodisiac
The Whitlams Black Stump Band
MGM Distribution 2023
Tim Freedman, of The Whitlams fame, has found a whole new audience in the broader country music scene and his latest offering is a re-working of his greatest hit, 1998’s No Aphrodisiac.
Tim moved to Byron Bay many years ago and started playing as a solo act touring northern NSW and Queensland.
He was still writing new material and on one of his trips between country towns he was surprised to hear one of his songs being played on country radio.
He gathered a group of top-notch country musicians around him and embraced the resurgence of his career.
The Black Stump Band includes long time Whitlams band member Terepai Richmond on drums as well as Rod McCormack and Matt Fell, two CMAA Producers of The Year, on banjo and bass. They are joined by Ollie Thorpe on electric and pedal steel guitar with Freedman on piano.
No Aphrodisiac has been produced to celebrate the Black Stump Band’s baptism on the main stage at the Deni Ute Muster and their headline at the Darwin Festival.
The song has been reimagined as a three-minute slice of banjo bliss and joins a list of singles from The Black Stump Band that have graced our airwaves over the last couple of years.
Last year Tim released The Day John Sattler Broke His Jaw, Blow Up The Pokies, and his wonderful version of Kate Kelly featuring Felicity Urquhart.
These songs have brought him to the attention of a new audience of fans who weren’t born when The Whitlams were Australia’s latest pop sensation.
Tim and the boys are working on a new album and given the quality of the songs he’s already released it should be worthwhile keeping an eye out for.
No Aphrodisiac was rated at number 6 in JJJ’s Hottest 100 Winners, so why not rework it and give it a second life. It truly is an Australian classic.
