NIGERIA: PS pay rise supported

NIGERIA

The head of Nigeria’s Public Service, Winifred Oyo-Ita (pictured) says she supports a pay increase for Federal workers and hopes it will be implemented quickly.

Mrs Oyo-Ita said a pay rise was one part of a Government-approved strategy to make the Public Service more efficient, productive, incorruptible and citizen-centred.

She said the strategy would seek to redesign three core training modules to cultivate the next generation of Public Service leaders.

“The plan will also launch a strategic sourcing of identified skills to bring in external talent at senior levels to drive high-level impact,” Mrs Oyo-Ita said.

She told a meeting of senior PS staff that the implementation of this strategy would not succeed without the support of Directorate-level officers who are critical stakeholders in the service.

“You are, therefore, expected to assume the responsibility of ensuring that the officers at medium and junior levels are carried along in the implementation of the strategy,” Mrs Oyo-Ita said.

She had hard words for workers who have yet to update their records in the country’s Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS), saying their salaries could be stopped.

“The Government has already extended the deadline for registrations, which must be completed by every employee of the Federal Government,” Mrs Oyo-Ita said.

“Those who fail to do so will be shut out of the payroll system.”

The IPPIS has been instituted to weed out so-called ghost workers — in many cases, PS employees who have retired or even died but whose families continue to draw their salaries.
