Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari (pictured) should concentrate on the country’s Public Service if he truly wants to combat corruption, a leading lawmaker has claimed.
Member of the House of Representatives, Chika Adamu said the anti-corruption drive of the Government should be less about the recovery of looted funds and assets and more on the need to create a system whereby officers would be discouraged from stealing public funds.
Mr Adamu alleged PS employees saddled with the responsibility of executing many projects committed outright theft.
“Six ‘solar powered’ boreholes sunk in my constituency cost NGN42 million [A$158,000] when they should not have cost more than NGN2.5 million [A$9,400] each,” Mr Adamus said.
“On top of that, none of the boreholes functioned for more than three weeks.”
Meanwhile, the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has attacked the Federal Government over the cancellation of promotion interviews organised by the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC).
General Secretary of the ASCSN, Bashir Lawal demanded that the officers affected should be adequately compensated to avert an industrial crisis.
“Senior Civil Servants were summoned from different parts of the country for the promotion examination, only for the examination to be cancelled at the last minute,” Mr Lawal said.
“The Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation should take necessary steps to stop such untidy practices or face the wrath of trade unions.”
