New website helps learning from home

Schools and families are to be supported to deliver learning at home by a comprehensive suite of web-accessible lessons prepared by expert teachers.

Announced by the Minister for Education, John Gardner, the Department of Education’s Our Learning SA website is primed with a daily package of lessons for every year from reception to Year 10.

Mr Gardner said the lessons were designed by year-level specialists, aligned with the Australian Curriculum and delivered via video or Microsoft PowerPoint and accessible on most web-enabled devices.

“Primary students can access lessons on literacy, numeracy, humanities and social sciences (HASS) and physical activity,” Mr Gardner said.

“Secondary students will be able to access English, maths, science and physical activity.”

He said a collection of educational resources and at-home activities were also available for preschool children.

The online lessons do not replace the face-to-face learning scheduled for reception, Year 1, Year 7, Year 8 and Year 12 students,” he said.

“However, understanding that some children are unable to attend due to being positive cases or close contacts, and that some families in these year levels have indicated a choice not to send their child to school, these resources will be available to support learning at home.”

The Minister said schools delivering learning from home in the non-face-to-face year levels could make use of the resources to supplement their remote learning program.

“Families will receive guidance on those programs directly from their child’s school,” he said.

Mr Gardner said the Department had also reactivated the Parent Remote Learning ICT Hotline, on 1800 271 211 from 8.30am to 4.30pm, to provide technical support to public school families with children learning from home.
