Victoria Police’s Water unit is to receive five new patrol vessels ahead of the summer season.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Lisa Neville said the five vessels would conduct marine search and rescue activities as well as law enforcement services this summer and for years to come.

“While Victorians are out enjoying our beaches, bays and rivers this summer, Water Police are ready 24-hours a day to respond to incidents and keep the community safe,” Ms Neville said.

“The new vessels have increased resistance to damage, and feature improved ergonomics and safety handling,” she said.

“They’re also equipped with Furuno technology, which allows for greater capabilities of forward-looking infrared cameras and multi-beam sonar technology.”

Ms Neville said the new vessels would replace older vessels that had to be retired.

She said Water Police coordinated all marine search and rescue incidents, enforced maritime laws and regulations, and ensured all vessels on Victorian waterways were equipped with appropriate safety equipment and compliant with registration requirements.

“The fleet of 35 vessels ranges in size from large vessels to inflatable rescue boats and jet skis, allowing for patrols and deployments on all State waterways,” the Minister said.

“The squad includes the largest dedicated marine rescue vessels in Victoria, capable of extended, offshore, rescue missions.”

Ms Neville said more than 50 police officers were trained to use the new vessels, which had begun to be rolled out across the State last week.
