New trees get leg-up in dogs’ park

The Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate (TCSS) has announced plans to replace dead or dying trees in the popular Yarralumla Dog Park.

Manager of Urban Treescapes, Rachael Dawes said that a number of pine trees in the dog park had reached the end of their life spans and needed to be removed for safety reasons, as well as to improve the aesthetics of the area.

“We are committed to maintaining our urban forest here in the ACT, and it is important that we do renewal projects like this to rejuvenate areas with trees at the end of their life,” Ms Dawes said.

“Once the trees are removed we will be planting new trees in the park. We know those who use the park and their canine friends love having a bit of shade, especially on hotter days.”

She said the plan was to begin planting in spring this year.

“At this stage we are still looking at a number of options for the species of trees that will replace the existing pines,” Ms Dawes said.

“The removal of the trees will be staged over the next few months. Once works start the dog park will be subject to short term closures while the trees are being removed, probably no more than one day at a time.”

She said the removals would also be used as a training opportunity for new arborists.

“This is a great chance for new arborists to practice, without the risk of damaging a healthy tree,” Ms Dawes said.
