Surveyors in the ACT will soon be required to sit an online course and examination as part of moves to improve the quality of building in the Territory.
Minister for Building Quality Improvement, Gordon Ramsay said a mandatory online course and exam is to be phased in later this year to test the skills and knowledge of building surveyor applicants.
“Building surveyors play a key role in the safety, energy efficiency and liveability of our new homes and home extensions,” Mr Ramsay said.
“We need to make sure people in these roles understand their obligations and can carry out their responsibilities under the ACT building regulatory system.”
He said key changes would commence from 1 September with applicants needing to complete an online course on the ACT’s building regulatory and certification system.
He said from 1 November applicants must complete the course as well as an assessment before receiving their licence.
“Failing the assessment after two consecutive attempts will result in a wait period before participants can re-apply,” Mr Ramsay said.
“While applicants are required to have existing qualifications and experience, these new measures will further demonstrate their knowledge and ability to interpret building laws and standards,” he said.
