The Department of Education says new rules aimed at keeping children safe on buses to and from early childhood centres are now in force.
In a statement, the Department said changes to the Education and Care Services National Regulations included a requirement for someone other than the driver to be present while children got on and off the bus.
“There must also be a mandatory full check of the vehicle after all children have disembarked, with the services notifying the regulator if they provide regular transportation, and keeping records detailing exactly how children are accounted for,” the Department said.
It restated its Look Before You Lock safety campaign, introduced in 2020 following the death of a child in Cairns.
“It warns parents, carers, and service providers to be vigilant and always check the seats before leaving a vehicle,” the Department said.
“New Look Before You Lock radio and social media reminders are rolling out across Queensland throughout Term One.”
Minister for Education, Grace Grace said families needed to have peace of mind that when they sent their children to school, kindergarten, or day care, the children would come home safely.
“The Department of Education, as the Regulatory Authority will not hesitate to take serious action, up to and including prosecution, when providers fail to ensure children’s health and safety,” Ms Grace said.
