South Australians living or visiting in Adelaide’s north-eastern suburbs now have access to more green space as the Department for Environment and Water (DEW) opens its latest reservoir reserve.
Announced by Minister for Environment and Water, David Speirs, the Little Para Reservoir Reserve opened on 16 October offering a range of land-based activities including bike riding, walking, running and picnicking.
Mr Speirs said the new reservoir reserve followed the opening of Hope Valley (December 2020) and provided locals with open space, three kilometres of trails and a new lookout offering beautiful views over the reservoir and surrounding hills.
He said new visitor facilities in Little Para added to the existing recreation offerings in the area.
“Our expectation is that this reserve will be most predominantly enjoyed by people living within a short bike ride or walking distance,” Mr Spiers said.
He said the State’s reservoir reserves had already welcomed more than 270,000 visitors since the gates to Myponga first opened in April 2019.
The Minister said that an inaugural, sold-out Reservoir Outdoor Adventure Race, a triathlon event combining cycling, kayaking and running, was held at Warren Reservoir Reserve as part of SA Water’s Reservoirs Partnership Program.
“The fact this event sold out more than two weeks prior is a clear indication of South Australians’ appetite for more green, open spaces,” he said.
“Excitingly, there’s even more to come before the end of the year, with Mount Bold and Happy Valley soon opening to the public and Barossa Reservoir currently receiving new visitor facilities such as pathways, more green spaces and improved car parking and access ramps,” Mr Speirs said.
