New rail campaign leaves the station

A new campaign aimed at educating motorists, cyclists and other road users about how to deal with light rail has been launched by Minister for Transport and City Services, Meegan Fitzharris.

Ms Fitzharris said the Rail Ready Light Rail Safety Program was designed to ensure people were safe and aware of the changes coming to the roads, footpaths and pedestrian crossings along the light rail route.

“Stage one of Canberra’s light rail network from Gungahlin to Civic is on track to be completed later this year,” Ms Fitzharris said.

“Two of the next major milestones for the project will be the electrification of overhead wires and vehicle testing.”

She said it was important people stayed safe along the route.

“The Rail Ready campaign aims to ensure people know how to keep safe when they are walking, cycling or driving near the light rail system.

“We also want to make sure people with a disability are able to use light rail safely and know how to navigate the system.”

Ms Fitzharris stressed that the light rail system had live overhead wires so people should learn not to go near them.

“After it has been raining the tracks may be slippery, and the vehicles are wider than the tracks so make sure you keep a safe distance,” she said.

“I’m sure for many of us this will be our first experience with a light rail system, so learning how to use it, being safe and knowing what to look out for will be really important.”

Transport Canberra and Canberra Metro are working in partnership to deliver the Rail Ready safety campaign which can be accessed at this PS News link.
