New PS guide on recruiting remotely

The Victorian Public Sector Commission (VPSC) has released a new guide to assist public sector organisations hiring when members were working remotely.

The Commission said that even with people working remotely, it was important that hiring continued so the sector could support service delivery.

“But as the public sector organisations have been telling us, hiring in a remote way can be hard,” the VPSC said.

“So we created How to hire when working remotely – practical tips and a guide to complying with the law,” it said.

“This guide helps public sector organisations adapt their processes and comply with the employment principles and standards in the Public Administration Act 2004.”

The VPSC said it had consulted eight Victorian Government Departments and the Victoria Police when creating the guide.

It said the guide contained advice on how to create a good hiring experience; choose the right assessment options; make reasonable adjustments for candidates with disability; and ensure the process was consistent and transparent.

“It’s not only helpful with coronavirus physical distancing, but also prepares us for a future where we may do more remote working,” it said.

“We wrote this guide with both employees and candidates in mind.”

The Commission’s 14-page guide, as well as a three-page quick tips guide, can be accessed at this PS News link.
