The Western Australian Government has announced that construction is underway on the new Paraburdoo Hospital, building up the state’s health infrastructure needs in the regions.

Early works have begun, including the demolition of the northern hospital block, the establishment of parking areas and the construction of the new building ground pad.

The new hospital will be built on the site of the existing health service, with access to the current facility to be maintained throughout the construction to ensure the community continues to receive care.

The hospital will feature a new emergency department, an integrated primary and community care service, a two-bed short-stay unit and a private GP clinic.

The facility will deliver a flexible model of care, providing patients with greater access to short-stay inpatient services, treatment, assessment and continuing care closer to home.

“We’re investing in modern, fit-for-purpose health infrastructure right across Western Australia, ensuring regional communities have access to high-quality facilities closer to home,” Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey said.

“When complete, the new hospital will bring together emergency, primary and community healthcare services in a contemporary, purpose-built facility that serves Paraburdoo well into the future.”

This will reduce the need for locals to travel for medical services.

Completion of construction is scheduled for 2028, with the new facility providing modern services closer to home and meeting the community’s growing needs.

Construction is being done by Western Australian-based builder Cooper & Oxley under an Early Contractor Involvement procurement process.

The project is being delivered with help from Rio Tinto, which has contributed $20 million through its $250 million commitment to the government’s Resources Community Investment Initiative.

Paraburdoo’s new hospital is part of the government’s record $5.5 billion investment in health infrastructure, which aims to boost capacity and ensure continued access to high-quality care, including in the regions.

Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel said: “The new Paraburdoo Hospital will strengthen healthcare in the Pilbara region, giving local families greater access to high-quality healthcare closer to home.

“We welcome this investment by the Cook Labor Government and Rio Tinto, which will deliver lasting benefits for Paraburdoo and ensure our healthcare services can continue to meet the needs of our growing population.”
