The panel reviewing NSW’s financial relationship with the Federal Government has issued a Discussion Paper to start a national conversation on how to work for a better future.

Chaired by former Chief Executive of Telstra, David Thodey, the Federal Financial Relations Review Panel’s paper is its first major publication.

Mr Thodey said the discussion paper, NSW Review of Federal Financial Relations, examined how NSW and the Commonwealth could work together to build a stronger economy, encourage state-led reform and deliver better value for taxpayers.

“As Australians are planning for the future, they have every right to expect that their governments are doing the same,” Mr Thodey said.

“What ultimately matters for good government is the outcomes for citizens,” he said.

Treasurer, Dominic Perrottet said the Panel was appointed earlier this year to bring fresh expertise to the important issue of preparing for the future.

“Key to the Panel’s review will be consideration of how more sustainable and modernised funding arrangements can ensure we meet the needs of future generations,” Mr Perrrottet said.

“Good policy now can avoid hard choices later,” he said.

“The challenge for the expert panel is to identify options and ways we can improve the system and at the same time ensure we maintain a stable and reliable revenue base to fund essential services and infrastructure into the future.”

Mr Perrottet said working cooperatively with the Commonwealth and other states to ensure the best outcome was an integral part of the Review.
