Canberrans have been invited to explore and connect with local climate action initiatives through a new online resource called ‘Canberra Community Projects’.
According to the Minister for Water, Energy and Emissions Reduction, Shane Rattenbury the online tool will support greater community collaboration on climate projects by showcasing the range of opportunities available for our community to get involved.
“We are in the middle of a climate crisis and the ACT Government wants to empower our community to be part of the solution,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“This new online tool allows Canberrans to discover a range of climate action projects around the ACT by using an interactive map,” he said.
“If you have a community driven project that focuses on energy, recycling and waste, water and plants, transport and travel, resilience or adapting to extreme events you can now submit your story to be added to the map.
Mr Rattenbury said a great example of a project was the community-led, volunteer-run Community Toolbox Canberra.
“This project is membership based and allows members to borrow a wide range of tools and equipment for activities such as DIY, craft, cooking, home projects and more,” the Minister said.
“The sharing model creates a way for people to share equipment and reduces the need for individuals to purchase tools, helping to reduce resource use and avoid waste to landfill,” he said.
“Supporting Canberrans to make everyday climate choices is crucial to achieving our target of net zero emissions by 2045. We know Canberrans care about the environment and the ACT is full of passionate people working to make a difference and take action on climate change.”
Mr Rattenbury said every person could be part of the ACT’s climate action journey as the online resource would help them to have an opportunity to engage, connect, learn, and be inspired by the efforts taking place around Canberra.
“This initiative addresses key actions from the government’s ACT Climate Change Strategy 2019-25 to encourage community driven solutions to climate change and collaborate for increased ambitions,” he said.
