The Olympic Games’ Coordination Office has been established in Brisbane with the aim of coordinating the delivery of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games with the various Games partners.
The Office follows an independent report prepared by a consultant that recommended the establishment of a coordinating authority.
Accountable to the Parliament, the Office will be headed by Director-General of the Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water, Graham Fraine.
Dr Fraine has held a number of senior roles in the Public Service, including that of Deputy Under-Treasurer.
Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk said that underpinning the Brisbane 2032 Coordination Office would be the Olympic and Paralympic Games Infrastructure Office, which would design and deliver the key venues, villages, and transport infrastructure.
“A Leader’s Forum, which includes Federal, State and Council representatives, will work in tandem with the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
“The structure will be reviewed after two years to ensure it continues to be the best model in the lead-up to 2032.”
Vice President of the International Olympic Committee, John Coates said the model made eminent sense.
“The last thing we should be doing is adding layers of bureaucracy,” Mr Coates said.
“Pleasingly this model does not.”
Minister Assisting the Premier on Olympic and Paralympic Games Infrastructure, Steven Miles agreed, saying the Government led the delivery of roads, hospitals, schools and sporting infrastructure across the State, so it made sense to build Games infrastructure as well.
The Minister for Sport, Stirling Hinchliffe said the 12-member Brisbane 2032 Legacy Committee was already compiling great community ideas.
