The Department of Communities has begun community consultation on the establishment of a new office to champion the rights of people with disability.
In a statement, the Department said the disability landscape had been rapidly changing across Western Australia.
“The announcement of community engagement around a new office reinforces the State Government’s ongoing commitment to evolve and deliver better outcomes for people with disability,” the Department said.
“A disability office will be a key priority, with the aim to promote a more inclusive and equitable WA where the 411,500 people living with disability are enabled to participate fully in their community.”
It said the new office would provide strategic leadership, advice and advocacy to influence Government and the community to transform and enable disability services reform.
“It is intended that the office will have an outward focus to build an inclusive WA and to grow and strengthen the disability sector and workforce,” the Department said.
It said the consultation period would run until 6 September, with people with disability, their families, carers, and disability support organisations particularly invited to take part as well as the broader community.
“A range of voices are needed during this engagement process to help us improve outcomes for people with disability, their families and carers,” the Department said.
