The new Western Australian Museum in the Perth Cultural Centre is to be officially opened in November.
Announcing the date, Premier, Mark McGowan said the new museum will be a “cultural tourism sensation” with eight new permanent galleries, a 1,000 square metre temporary exhibition gallery, life-long learning studios, and retail and café spaces.
“It will be a vibrant centre of inspiration, learning and enjoyment for people of all ages,” Mr McGowan said.
“Underpinning every visitor experience is the latest scientific and cultural research, connecting with State and National Curriculum priorities and promoting learning across all ages.”
He said the museum had been developed with a people-first approach, featuring the voices of Western Australians sharing their stories their own way.
Five of Perth’s significant heritage buildings have been revitalised and integrated with an architecturally stunning new building that is already being viewed as Perth’s newest landmark destination.
Minister for Arts and Heritage, David Templeman said he was delighted the new museum had evolved from the same buildings it had occupied for nearly 130 years.
“The stunning reimagining of these significant heritage buildings has breathed new life into the Perth Cultural Centre and will once again position the Western Australian Museum at the very heart of its community,” Mr Templeman said.
He said the $400 million redevelopment would be a significant cultural tourism attraction for the State.
A nine-day festival, expected to attract thousands of visitors, is to feature around the 21 November opening date.
