New multicultural laws demand PS response

South Australia’s new multicultural laws have come into operation following their first major review in 30 years with State Authorities required front and centre to be culturally responsive in their services.

Releasing the new South Australian Multicultural Act 2021 which became law on 2 December, the Department of the Premier and Cabinet (DPC) said it introduced the concept of ‘interculturalism’ as a way of strengthening the foundation of multiculturalism.

“Meeting the needs of South Australia’s contemporary society and reflecting feedback received during a Statewide consultation process, the Act sets a foundation for new multicultural policy directions and provides for the development of the South Australian Multicultural Charter,” the DPC said,

It said the Charter would define what ‘multiculturalism’ and ‘interculturalism’ meant for all South Australians as well as contain provisions recognising the Aboriginal peoples of South Australia and their role in the State’s diversity.

It said it would also “guide the provision of culturally responsive services by State authorities”.

According to the Department the South Australian Multicultural Commission is to lead consultation and development of the Charter in collaboration with the Minister, Multicultural Affairs and the Commissioner for Aboriginal Engagement.

The Department said the Commission had been appointed to advise Government on multiculturalism generally and on the operation of the Act.
