New media campaign to share the road

ACT Policing have launched a new mass media awareness campaign, moving their road safety spotlight from speeding to sharing the road.

Following July’s month-long enforcement campaign which focused on speeding, Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman said he hoped August could be more about awareness than enforcement.

“ACT Policing issued 601 infringements for speed-related offences on Canberra’s roads in July,” Detective Inspector Boorman said.

“There are no excuses, the speed limit signs are nothing new, they tell you the maximum speed you’re allowed to drive at, and some people still don’t get it,” he said.

“There were plenty of motorists treating the road as their personal speedway, and on average, every 74 minutes in July someone was detected speeding by police in Canberra.”

Detective Inspector Boorman said that if the current trend continued, the police would surpass the number of speeding infringements issued for the whole of 2019 within the next few weeks.

“August will see ACT Policing asking road users to be more mindful of each other this month,” he said.

“I’m talking about tailgating, not slowing when passing emergency vehicles, or driving too close to cyclists.”

He said drivers should be alert and attentive on the road, and know their behaviour made a difference.

“Think about how your behaviour impacts on others, and share the road,” Detective Inspector Boorman said.
