The Natural Resource Commission has published a new Program Framework for monitoring and improving New South Wales’ forests
The Commission said it expected its Forest Monitoring and Improvement Program to improve the evidence-base for decision-making for forest management across tenures.
“This will strengthen the NSW Government’s ability to strategically and adaptively manage forests over time, including state forests, national parks, private native forests and crown forested land,” the Commission said.
It said it would support ecologically sustainable management of all NSW forests.
“The Program will focus on the needs of decision makers, stakeholders and the broader community in the ecologically sustainable management of NSW forests, including the need to adapt to changing circumstances, and explicitly link these needs to monitoring, evaluation and research.”
The Commission said the Program Framework laid an early foundation for the Program and set its broad direction.
“It outlines the expected outcomes and the actions to achieve these over the next five years,” it said.
It said the Framework described what the Program would deliver; how the Program would be governed; and how it could be improved.
“A NSW Forest Monitoring Steering Committee, including NSW government agency representatives and independent scientific experts, will guide the Program,” it said.
“NSW agencies are responsible for delivering monitoring, evaluation and research projects under the Program including through external partnerships, as well as reporting on relevant forest agreements.”
