High demand for electric vehicles and changes in the motoring industry have led to South Australia introducing a state-first automotive trade apprenticeship.
The newly created Certificate III in Automotive Electric Vehicle Technology supports the booming EV sector, ensuring the state has a skilled workforce capable of safely diagnosing, servicing and repairing EVs.
As battery and plug-in hybrid models rise in popularity, demand for EV technicians is increasing. One in four new vehicles sold in the state in the first half of this year was an EV, meaning the maintenance and repair industry must adjust accordingly.
Data from the Motor Trade Association SA/NT (MTA) shows that battery EV sales in June of this year were up 144 per cent compared with June last year, with plug-in hybrid sales up 98 per cent.
Each training place in the new apprentice pathway will be subsidised by the State Government, significantly reducing the cost for South Australians to pick up new skills.
The inaugural program will be delivered by MTA Training and Employment, training new apprentices and upskilling workers looking to meet demand.
This new certificate is the state’s first four-year trade apprenticeship focused on EVs, building on the government’s investments in short courses that upskill the workforce.
The move follows advocacy from major stakeholders including dealerships, employers and vehicle manufacturers, who have been requesting EV servicing.
Qualifications will provide transferable EV servicing skills across the automotive sector, regardless of make or model, with qualified workers able to follow national work standards.
The certificate course will be added to the Subsidised Traineeship and Apprenticeship List.
