The Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) is calling for feedback on a proposed 10-year cycling strategy that redefines what it means for South Australia to be a cycling-friendly State.

Making the call, the Department said the 2022-2032 Cycling Strategy for South Australia outlined the vision for riding in the State and built on previous successes and achievements.

It said the draft Statewide Strategy presented the current state of riding in South Australia and related the trends, the barriers to riding and the strategic priorities needed to help increase participation.

“It recognises the opportunity to promote South Australia as a great place to ride and outlines the objectives, initiatives, actions and priorities to guide future investment, expand and improve cycling infrastructure and support a safe and convenient environment for riding,” it said.

“It will be delivered in collaboration with State Government Agencies, local Councils and sport and recreation organisations, who all play a key role in supporting more people to cycle, more often.”

DIT said the draft Strategy was the result of years of research, development and refinement and had been created in consultation with South Australian Government Agencies, industry bodies and peak stakeholder groups.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Corey Wingard said the presence of more cyclists on streets and recreation trails, particularly in response to COVID-19, highlighted the growing interest in riding both locally and globally.

“South Australia hosts world-class cycling events,” Mr Wingard said.

“Our mild climate, relatively flat topography, coastal and hills environments, and our world-renowned tourism and wine regions mean that we have wonderful conditions and locations for riding,” he said.

“This Strategy will guide future investment, expand and improve our riding infrastructure, and support a safe and convenient environment for riding, for everyone.”

DIT’s 37-page Strategy, with feedback open to 31 March, can be accessed at this PS News link and information on how to have a say at this link.
