Main Roads Western Australia is funding a new campaign to tackle roadside litter in the State, providing travellers with free compostable car litter bags.

The WA Naturally Thanks You campaign will have the re-useable ‘keep bags’ available at roadhouses along major highways. It will also include roadside signs, advertising at service stations, as well as social media.

The Agency said a nine-month trial found the initiative reduced roadside litter by as much as 70 per cent at some locations, with roadsides among the most littered sites in the State.

“The campaign complements other waste and litter initiatives, including thePlan for Plastics, the lightweight plastic bag ban and Containers for Change,” it said.

Minister for the Environment, Reece Whitby said WA Naturally Thanks You was an important initiative to reduce roadside litter by encouraging drivers to dispose of rubbish properly and not throw it out the car window.

“Litter is not only unsightly, but harmful to wildlife through poisoning, choking and entrapment. It also draws animals out onto the road, creating a danger for both them and motorists,” Mr Whitby said.

He was supported by the Minister for Transport, Rita Saffioti who said more Western Australians were exploring their own State since the pandemic, so it was more important than ever that motorists took responsibility and disposed of their litter correctly.

WA Naturally Thanks You is being coordinated by the Keep Australia Beautiful Council.
