The ACT Ambulance Service (ACTAS) has been boosted with the arrival of five state-of-the-art ambulances fitted with the latest in electric stretchers.
The upgrade is part of a program to enhance vehicle capabilities over four years.
Minister for Police and Emergency Service, Mick Gentleman said the ambulances fitted with the electronic stretchers and power loaders would help reduce physical demands on paramedics and improve patient safety.
“Three existing ambulances have also been retrofitted with electric stretchers and power loaders, while another three ambulances that have been replaced will be kept and maintained for use when demand surges during peak times,” Mr Gentleman said.
“Two additional ambulances, fitted with electric stretchers and power loaders, are also on track to join the ACTAS fleet this November.”
He said that demand on the Service was at its highest level ever, but nevertheless ACTAS had continued to record the best response times in the country over the past six years, as well as the highest levels of patient satisfaction.
“The program to roll out the electric stretchers and power loaders to all ESA ambulances is well on track to be completed by 2020,” Mr Gentleman said.
“Electric stretchers have a battery-powered hydraulic system that allows for much easier and safer carrying.”
He said it was anticipated that the use of electric stretchers will also reduce the likelihood of injuries being sustained when loading patients into ambulances.
