The Department of Education has established an Aboriginal Advisory Body to guide its progress towards a more culturally-responsive public education system.
In a statement the Department said the Advisory Body would help strengthen the wellbeing, engagement and achievement of Aboriginal students.
“We are seeking nine appointments to the Aboriginal Advisory Body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are committed to strengthening education outcomes for communities across Western Australia,” the Department said.
“The Advisory Body will inform and shape key decisions to achieve commitments as part of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap and the State Government’s Aboriginal Empowerment Strategy.”
Minister for Education, Tony Buti said this was an outstanding opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to play a key role in supporting the creation of enhanced learning environments for Aboriginal students.
“I am really excited about the creation of this Advisory Body as it will ensure cultural identity is at the centre of a student’s learning experience, fostering an environment where culture can thrive,” Dr Buti said.
“It will embrace the knowledge, expertise and experiences of Aboriginal people, and create opportunities to work collaboratively with Aboriginal communities to determine aspirations and opportunities for students.”
He said it was an important step towards more actively engaging Aboriginal people in the governance and oversight of the Department of Education’s progress towards reconciliation and building its cultural responsiveness.
