The Motor Accident Injuries Commission has announced that Compulsory Third Party Insurance will be replaced by the Motor Accident Injuries Scheme, a move aimed at improving service and support for insurance claimants.
A statement from the Commission said the new scheme would start on 1 February and would provide cover for accident injuries and quicker access to benefits.
It said drivers with ACT-registered vehicles were already covered by the new scheme.
“If you own a motor vehicle registered in the ACT, your existing CTP insurance policy will automatically become a Motor Accident Injuries policy,” the Commission said.
“The Scheme will provide quicker access to benefits allowing recovery to get underway as soon as possible, and ongoing support for those who need it most.”
It said the scheme would also provide lower premiums.
“Under the scheme, for accidents that occur on or after 1 February, certain benefits will be payable to people who are injured in a motor vehicle accident, regardless of who was at fault.”
The Commission said the benefits included: reasonable and necessary treatment and domestic care; income replacement; quality of life benefits; death benefits; funeral benefits.
It said information about how to make an application for benefits would be available once the scheme is in operation from 1 February.
