The National Capital Authority (NCA) has launched a search for an experienced business operator to manage the hiring of pedal boats on Lake Burley Griffin.
Having recently acquired a number of pedal boats the NCA is finalising the restoration of the boats and seeking an operator to manage the business functions through an Expression of Interest (EOI) project.
Chief Executive of the NCA, Sally Barnes said the EOI invited respondents to provide and operate a commercial boat hire service, with the hope of having the pedal boats back on the lake this summer.
“The pedal boats were a popular recreational activity enjoyed by locals and visitors for many years and have a direct link to Canberra’s history,” Ms Barnes said.
“The NCA is excited to have them returned to Lake Burley Griffin,” she said.
She said the boats had been assessed by a marine safety expert and would undergo minor repairs and updates.
“In addition, they will receive a new coat of paint,” she said.
Ms Barnes said one or two of the boats would be on display at Floriade as a commemoration and reminder that the boats were returning to the lake.
NCA Director of National Capital Events and Activation, Suzanne Hannema said responses to the EOI were due by 9 September.
“It seems that just about everyone I’ve spoken with has a joyous memory of the boats, pedalling and exploring the Lake and taking a closer look at attractions like the Captain Cook Memorial Jet,” Ms Hannema said.
