The National Capital Authority (NCA) is to develop a management plan for dealing with flying foxes in Commonwealth Park and is seeking public comments.
The Grey Headed Flying-fox Camp Management Plan is being developed to provide a framework to guide the NCA’s management of Commonwealth Park while also being committed to the protection of the flying-fox camp.
In a statement, the NCA said all flying-foxes were protected under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
“The grey headed flying fox (Pteropus poliocephalus), which visits Commonwealth Park, is a vulnerable species and considered to be a matter of national significance under the Act,” the NCA said.
“Management of flying foxes or their habitat must be in line with the Australian Government’s referral guideline for management actions in grey-headed and spectacled flying-fox camps,” it said.
The NCA said it was seeking input into the plan and its implementation as its current aim is to gauge public perception on flying foxes and the Commonwealth Park colony.
The Authority said it was also interested in ideas and feedback about the proposed management options and had created an online survey was available through the its website until 4 August.
“By participating in this survey, you will help the NCA understand the community’s knowledge and views towards the management actions concerning the flying foxes in Commonwealth Park,” the NCA said.
The survey can be accessed at this PS News link.
