A research project conducted in Victoria has revealed that the National Broadband Network (NBN) can deliver very high speed services with its current hybrid-fibre coaxial (HFC) network.

Chief Technology Officer at NBN, Ray Owen said the research project was good news for residential and business customers using HFC as it showed how the technology would evolve to meet customer demand.

Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, Paul Fletcher said the research found out that the network was capable of delivering speeds up to 1 gigabit per second (1Gbps), demonstrating a future upgrade path for the technology.

“These results showcase that our multi-technology mix approach is the most efficient and economical solution in deploying lightning fast speeds for millions of Australians,” Mr Fletcher said.

“The NBN has dramatically changed the communications landscape in Australia,” he said.

“Today, more than 85 per cent of homes and businesses can connect to high speed broadband on the NBN and more than 5.5 million Australians have already connected.”

Mr Fletcher said the NBN would be able to take full advantage of technological advances in the future to deliver better outcomes to consumers at affordable prices.

He said the NBN build was on track for completion by June 2020.
