The Department of the Environment and Energy has issued a Discussion Paper on plans to update the nation’s policies on waste control.
Developed jointly with the States, Territories, industry and non-Government organisations, the Paper seeks input on priority issues to be considered in future Australian waste management and resource recovery policies.
According to the Department, Australia generates around 64 million tonnes of waste every year.
“To better support our economy, protect the health of our communities and reduce environmental impacts, we need to take action on waste,” the Department said.
It said that in April, the Commonwealth, State, Territory and Local Governments committed to set a sustainable path for the nation’s recyclable waste with an agreement to work together to better manage it, including updating the 2009 National Waste Policy by the end of the year.
“Preparation of the Discussion Paper has been coordinated by the Australian Government, with input from State and Territory Government officials, the Australian Local Government Association, business and industry associations and non-government organisations,” the Department said.
“The purpose of the Discussion Paper is to seek input on priority issues to be considered in future Australian waste management and resource recovery.”
It said feedback could be provided by filling out a simple online survey, or by emailing or posting a written submission.
