The Department for Environment and Water (DEW) has announced that South Australia’s only World Heritage-listed site – Naracoorte Caves National Park – has been nominated National Parks and Wildlife Services’ ‘Park of the Month’ for March.
Chosen by Environment SA, the four-hour drive southeast of Adelaide to Naracoorte Caves has been described as a ‘must-see destination’ on the Limestone Coast.
According to DEW there are plenty of activities for the whole family at the Caves including four open caves and the Wonambi Fossil Centre that recreates a time when megafauna roamed the landscape and the fossil hunters natured playground.
The Department said activities at Naracoorte Caves included a guided nature and cultural walk with Bunganditj Elder Uncle Ken Jones; an underground photography tour; yoga in the Park; and a bat night in the caves.
Site Manager at Naracoorte Caves, Thomas Shortt, said the Caves provided a unique opportunity to learn more about the Australian megafauna and their environment.
“More than 500,000 years ago, many of these species, including the marsupial lion, Thylacoleo carnifex, fell into openings that had formed in the roof of the cave, several of which formed in the roof of Victoria Fossil Cave,” Mr Shortt said.
“Their fossilised remains now tell the story of Australia’s unique animal heritage, and this was recognised in 1994 when Naracoorte Caves became a UNESCO World Heritage site,” he said.
“In March, we have planned some special activities for Park of the Month, including a 10 per cent discount on tours in the park if you book online using the promo code NCPOTM2023.”
