The Powerhouse Museum is to present the Australian Museum’s annual exhibition of the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year this August while the Australian Museum undergoes renovations.
Minister for the Arts, Don Harwin said it was a great outcome for museum goers as it would keep the State’s cultural output thriving during the $57.5 million Project Discover transformation taking place at the Australian Museum.
“In February 2021 the Australian Museum will open the global blockbuster exhibition Tutankhamun: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh,” Mr Harwin said.
Director and Chief Executive of the Australian Museum, Kim McKay said the museum would still be working hard during the closure period which was set to begin on 19 August for approximately 12 months.
“Many of our community and school outreach programs will continue, as will the important research work of the Australian Museum Research Institute, a global leader in scientific discovery and conservation,” Ms McKay said.
Chief Executive at the Powerhouse Museum, Lisa Havilah said admission to the Australian Geographic exhibition would be free with general admission.
Ms Havilah said the Powerhouse Museum at Ultimo would remain open until its staged closure began on 1 July 2020 to ensure that residents and visitors to NSW had access to a major museum during the Australian Museum’s construction period.
She said the development of the Powerhouse Precinct in Parramatta was on track for delivery in 2023.
