An exhibition at the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) at Old Parliament House has won a national award at the Museums and Galleries National Awards, known as MAGNA.
PlayUP — The Right to Have an Opinion and Be Heard is the third iteration of a popular exhibition that brings children and adults together through the lens of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
Creative Producer of Engagement at MoAD, Nanette Louchart-Fletcher said breaking down large concepts such as democracy, freedom and agency so that a child could understand them was a challenge for the Museum.
“MoAD has taken this challenge head-on, providing visitors with an experiential environment for democratic engagement where children have agency to make, learn and grow,” Ms Louchart-Fletcher said.
“PlayUP is a joyful, nurturing and dynamic space for conversation with visitors and their families about child rights … we see the CRC as a framework for children and adults to explore notions of democracy, social justice and civic engagement.”
She said MoAD had established a powerful learning environment through PlayUP, which had been embraced by the Museum’s youngest visitors and their families, building a loyal following of regular visitors who engaged with the content and the community.
