ACT Policing is calling on road users to pay extra attention to motorcyclists this month as its Road Safety Calendar focus turns to vulnerable road users.
Road Policing motorcycle officer with ACT Policing, Senior Constable Drew McKellar said the call for caution followed the deaths of two motorcyclists on the Territory’s roads in recent weeks.
“Vulnerable road users, including children, pedestrians and motorcyclists do not have the same protection as a car in a collision, and motorcyclists are over-represented in the ACT’s road fatality statistics,” Senior Constable McKellar said.
“Since 2016, 40 people have lost their lives on the Territory’s roads, and nine of them, that’s more than 20 per cent, have been motorcyclists,” he said.
“As motorcyclists are only about five per cent of registered vehicles, that’s a startling statistic.”
Senior Constable McKellar said everyone who used the roads needed to be aware of motorcycle safety.
“This month we’re asking all road users to be aware of motorcyclists, and for motorcyclists to remember how vulnerable they are,” he said.
Senior Constable McKellar said ACT Policing’s Road Safety Calendar campaign formed part of the ACT’s Road Safety Strategy which prioritised a Vision Zero approach to road safety.
