The ACT Health Directorate is to roll out new Walk-in Health Centres across Canberra’s suburbs to provide the community with more accessible public health care.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr and the Minister for Health, Rachel Stephen-Smith announced the plan saying work was already underway to build on the Territory’s existing networks of Walk-in Centres and Community Health Centres, which included a new Walk-in Health Centre at southside’s Coombs.

“The five nurse-led Walk-in Centres across the city already provide excellent care for injuries and illness including colds and flu, sprains and strains, skin conditions and rashes, and minor wounds and infections,” Mr Barr and Ms Stephen-Smith said.

“We will establish the first new Walk-in Health Centre in Coombs, where it will be co-located with the National Health Co-op GP clinic,” they said.

“This will support the Molonglo regions growing population and provide local families with a range of maternal and child health services.”

The Ministers said $10.9 million had been allocated to the Weston Creek Walk-in Centre to provide outpatient imaging services.

They said a further $2 million would go toward feasibility and site selection work for four new Walk-in Health Centres in South Tuggeranong, West Belconnen, Inner South and North Gungahlin.

“The feasibility study will investigate the potential to provide preventive health services, early intervention, and integrated care in the new centres,” they said.

“We will be working with communities in each of the five areas to ensure each local Walk-in Health Centre caters to the needs of our diverse regions and neighbourhoods.”

Mr Barr and Ms Stephen-Smith said the new Walk-in Health Centre at Coombs was on track to open on 1 July.
