The first Molonglo Valley high school is to open to students in 2023.

Announcing the plan, the Minister for Education and Early Childhood Development, Yvette Berry said it was important that children in the growing area had a local secondary school.

“Molonglo has grown to around 7,000 residents since 2011 and as new families settle into the region, it is important that students have a schooling pathway close to home,” Ms Berry said.

She said construction had begun on a primary school, which was set to open in 2021, with the high school to follow two years later.

“[The high school] will cater for 600 students in Years 7-10 and include specialist science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics and design learning spaces, a modern library resource centre, specialist outdoor learning areas such as an outdoor stage and environmental design spaces, and additional sports courts,” Ms Berry said.

She said the primary and high schools would share the same site, providing a smooth transition for students.

“This P-10 school will provide a state-of-the-art education facility focusing on 21st century education philosophies and will be Canberra’s second zero emissions school,” Ms Berry said.

“The ACT is leading the nation in climate action and school infrastructure is one way that the government can make a big difference towards reducing carbon emissions on behalf of the Canberra community.”

She said the local community would soon have the opportunity to have input into the school name, uniform and logo as part of the Government’s community engagement strategy for the facility.
