NSW Health has urged consumers of CORE Powerfoods frozen microwave meals to either dispose of them or return them for a refund due to the product’s link to several people suffering from Salmonella gastroenteritis.
Executive Director of Health Protection at NSW Health, Dr Jeremy McAnulty said Salmonella infection could be quite severe with some people requiring hospitalisation to manage dehydration.
Dr McAnulty said the following meals, with Best Before dates between 26 August 2020 and 4 October 2020 inclusive have been recalled: Going Nuts; Deep South Chilli; Muay Thai Meatballs; Holy Meatballs; Naked Chicken; Seismic Chicken; Old School; and Smokey Mountain Meatballs.
He said the products had been available at Coles and independent retailers nationally as well as at IGAs in NSW, the ACT, Victoria and the Northern Territory.
“At least 10 NSW residents are believed to have developed Salmonella infection after consuming this product and investigations are ongoing,” Dr McAnulty said.
“NSW Health is working closely with other States and Territories to investigate other infections of this unusual Salmonella type, Salmonella Weltevreden, that are thought to be associated with this product,” he said.
“The cause of the contamination is still under investigation.”
He said symptoms included fever, headache, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.
“Symptoms usually start around six to 72 hours after the contaminated food is eaten and usually last for four to seven days, but can continue for much longer,” he said.
“It is important that people do not prepare food for others while they are unwell with salmonellosis and as a precaution for 48 hours after symptoms have passed,” Dr McAnulty said.
