A range of journalists, reporters, media producers and commentators employed at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) have been recognised for excellence in the Melbourne Press Club’s Quill Awards.

Award highlights for the ABC included an honour for a lifetime of achievement to Barrie Cassidy (pictured) and Matilda Marozzi being named Young Journalist of the Year.

Mr Cassidy also won the Keith Dunstan Quill for Commentary for his work on ABC TV’s Insiders Extra, and other ABC journalists and teams picked up awards for business news reporting, radio journalism, reporting on disability issues and long-form television feature journalism.

The Melbourne Press Club Board said it was unanimous in its decision to give Mr Cassidy the Lifetime Achievement Award “in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Australian political journalism”.

Chief Executive of the club, Mark Baker said Mr Cassidy was one of the finest reporters and broadcasters of his generation.

“His work on Insiders has transformed the landscape of political journalism,” Mr Baker said.

Among other work for which ABC members were recognised was a story on what could happen to small businesses targeted by the Australian Taxation Office; an account of an international student fatally bashed in a Chinatown alley, and a Four Corners report that led to a review of the laws of consent.

Also recognised were reports on the insurance industry telling the stories of two women harshly treated by insurance companies which led to the intervention of a senator in one case and prompted the back-down of a major insurer in the other, and Access to Fashion, celebrating a project showcasing inclusive fashion.
