The current public health measures in place across the ACT have been extended for a further two weeks until Thursday 2 September.

Chief Minister, Andrew Barr said the COVID-19 Delta strain outbreak was by far the most serious public health risk the Territory had faced in the past 12 months.

“We have said throughout the outbreak in Greater Sydney that we would act quickly and decisively,” Mr Barr said.

“We are asking Canberrans to continue staying at home and avoiding contact with people outside of their household,” he said.

“Canberrans should only be leaving their homes for essential reasons.

“These reasons have not changed.”

Mr Barr said non-essential businesses, including non-essential retail, would continue to stay closed and face masks must be worn at all times by everyone aged 12 years and over when outside of the home.

The Chief Minister said hospitality venues were only able to operate takeaway services.

“Now more than ever, the use of the Check In CBR app is critical when leaving your home,” he said.

Mr Barr said arrangements that may support local businesses to safely provide online ordering and click and collect services, in line with public health advice, were being considered, while construction work would largely remain a prohibited activity for the time being.

He said financial support mechanisms for individuals and local businesses who were significantly impacted by the public health measures had been extended and public health measures would continue to be reviewed on a daily basis.

“We know from what we are seeing around Australia that the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus is highly infectious and life threatening,” he said.

“For the sake of your health, your family’s health and for the health of the community – it’s critical that Canberrans take every precaution they can,” Mr Barr said.
