Six projects in the Peel region have received a share of $453,000 in funding in the latest round of the Regional Economic Development (RED) Grants program.
The sixth round of the WA Government program aims to invigorate the region’s economic growth and development by supporting local businesses.
The RED Grants program is a Cook Government initiative investing $50.85 million over nine years towards locally driven projects that build regional business resilience and diversify the economy.
The RED grants form part of the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development’s Royalties for Regions program, which provides each of WA’s nine regional development commissions with funds for local projects.
Each local project can apply for a grant of up to $250,000.
According to the DPRID’s most recent annual report, the program’s fifth round sent more than $5.5 million to 54 projects throughout the state, which included alternative energy solutions in Kimberley and a new entertainment and tourism precinct for Geraldton.
The successful projects in the sixth round will diversify the agribusiness, manufacturing and tourism sectors in Peel and enhance capacity to stimulate business growth and create more job opportunities for the region.
“The most recent round of RED Grants provides strong backing for these key growth sectors, empowering businesses to expand their operations,” Minister for Regional Development Don Punch said.
“The funding will facilitate capacity building, promote job growth, and provide skills development opportunities in Peel, resulting in positive outcomes that extend beyond these businesses and resonate throughout the entire region.”
Among the successful recipients is Groundswell Drivethru and Cafe, which will use a $150,000 grant for the enrichment of its coffee and chocolate products in partnership with Food Innovation Precinct WA (FIPWA).
Honey West will use a $100,000 grant to purchase equipment to transition from a wholesale to a retail business, and increase its pollination services in the Shire of Boddington.
Herron-based Thorny Devil Brewing Company has also been awarded $100,000 to purchase new brewery equipment, which will enable it to increase production capacity and efficiency.
Peel Tyre Service will use a $43,000 grant for the installation of a heavy-duty wheel and tyre-changing machine, along with an outdoor undercover work zone for its operations in the agriculture and commercial sector.
Dolphin Quay Cruises has received $30,000 funding to hire a vessel to determine the feasibility of running cultural tours to explore the rich Aboriginal cultural history of the Mandurah region.
Salt and Ember Glamping has also received a $30,000 grant to help develop Peel’s upscale camping accommodation options.
