Light rail has been involved in its first accident, leading to Transport Canberra reminding the community to be fully aware of Light Rail Vehicles (LRV) on the road network.
At approximately 7.47am last Saturday (9 March) a pedestrian and LRV collided at the intersection of Cooyong Street and Northbourne Avenue in the City.
The ACT Emergency Services Agency and ACT Policing attended the incident.
According to reports, the pedestrian remained conscious and was not trapped under the LRV but sustained upper body injuries and was taken to the Canberra Hospital in a stable condition by the ACT Ambulance Service.
In a statement, Transport Canberra said light rail testing was under way and the community should be aware of this when crossing intersections.
“It is important for motorists and pedestrians to be aware that Light Rail Vehicles are now running between Gungahlin and the City. They are silent, large and travel quickly,” the Agency said.
“It is important that pedestrians and motorists pay attention to their surroundings. If everybody obeys the road rules, particularly around red lights, everyone will be safe.”
Transport Canberra urged everyone in the community to be alert when walking and cycling near light rail and to observe the traffic signals.
In the meantime, LRV movements on the corridor are continuing.
