Canberra’s light rail celebrated its second birthday on Tuesday of this week (20 April) by reflecting on the past two years of its services in the Territory.
According to Our CBR over 6.6 million passenger trips were taken on the light rail in the first two years and it covered close to 1.8 million kilometres, the equivalent of 44 laps around Earth.
“The busiest day overall was Friday 17 May 2019, when Canberrans made close to 19,500 trips,” Our CBR said.
“The quietest day was Christmas Day 2020, when only 522 trips were taken to and from Christmas lunch,” it said.
“Public transport usage took a hit over the last 12 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however total light rail use has already re-bounded to approximately 75 per cent of pre-COVID levels.”
Our CBR said that over the last two years Canberrans had embraced light rail, with many using public transport for the first time.
The newsletter said a recent survey of light rail customers found more than two-thirds of respondents were more likely to use public transport now that light rail was in operation.
“More and more Canberrans are using public transport and using light rail to get to work, with over 40 per cent of recent survey respondents using light rail for their commute, compared with 35 per cent in 2020,” it said.
