Libraries ACT has unveiled a busy program of activities and events for September, with one highlight being Talk Like a Pirate Day on the 19th.

Director of Libraries ACT, Vanessa Little said the libraries were passionate about communicating the benefits of reading to all Canberrans as reading had been shown to influence identity formation in children and reduce stress by 68 per cent in adults!

She said that on 19 September wannabe pirates could pop on their eye patches and head for the high seas as the library celebrated Talk Like a Pirate Day.

“Little ones aged three-to-five can celebrate the day with us at Tuggeranong Library as we read pirate stories and sing pirate songs,” Ms Little said.

“We’ve also got a range of fresh workshops and talks including Gardening with Tracey Bool: Seed sowing and Story Time, and author talks from Zoya Patel on 10 September and L.J.M. Owen on 12 September.”

She said people across the nation were being encouraged to pick up a book and read for one hour in celebration of Australian Reading Hour on 20 September.

“Whilst we encourage all Canberrans to participate and read for one hour on 20 September, we also want to encourage reading all the time.”

She invited families to “Pop on your jammies and join us for family story time” on the evening of Wednesday 19 September at Gungahlin library where the Jim-jam story slam would be held for all ages.

“We’ve also got live readings from a selection of well-known fiction for a variety of ages at Woden Library on Saturday afternoon 22 September.”

Ms Little said Wendy Orr, winner of the 2017 Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Best Children’s Book, would also be a highlight when she visited Woden Library on 24 September.
