Libraries reopen to tell their stories

In-person programs have returned to Libraries ACT after working online for most of the past year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Director of Content and Engagement at the Libraries, Sarah Steed said the libraries played a fundamental role in bringing people together in an all-inclusive, safe and friendly environment.

“I think for many people programs like these at libraries are a rite of passage,” Ms Steed said.

“People have been really happy to be back,” she said.

“Some of the babies at Giggle and Wiggle, which is aimed at zero- to two-year-old’s, were born just before or during COVID, and the parents had not been able to bring them up to now.”

Ms Steed said that to meet COVID-safe requirements, participant numbers were smaller than before the pandemic and bookings were now essential via the Libraries ACT website for all programs.

The Director said bookings opened three days before each session and people were encouraged to be ready as they filled up quickly.

“The library itself is a very social place, not just for the parents, but the kids can learn about being with other kids; there are so many benefits to it,” she said.

“I think it does allow parents to spend quality time with children and you see them really connecting, for example through the songs we might sing at Giggle and Wiggle or the books we read at Story Time,” Ms Steed said.
