Libraries ACT has revealed its annual list of the Most Requested Book of the Year, declaring The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson the Territory’s favourite.
Revealing the top five loan books and top five borrowed DVD’s to the sound of a dramatic drum-roll, Director of Libraries ACT, Vanessa Little (pictured) said it was the second year running Mr Manson’s book had made Canberra’s top 5, moving up two places from third in 2017.
“Library members have demonstrated a continuing interest in non-fiction titles for a third year running,” Ms Little said, “with self-help books, memoirs and travel books comprising all five of the top five requested books.”
She listed the most requested books (fiction and non-fiction) in 2018 as:
1: The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson;
2: The Barefoot Investor by Scott Pape;
3: 12 Rules For Life by Jordan Peterson;
4: The Trauma Cleaner by Sarah Krasnostein;
5: Saga Land by Richard Fidler and Kári Gíslason.
Ms Little also named the most borrowed DVDs saying fiction was preferred to non-fiction with a particular interest in movies based on books or comics.
The most borrowed DVDs in 2018 were:
1: Big Little Lies
2: The Crown: The Complete First Season
3: Paddington 2
4: Thor Ragnarok
5: Blade Runner 2049
She said around 2.6 million items are borrowed from ACT public libraries each year.
“This demonstrates the continued relevance of our local libraries to our community and as an integral part of the everyday lives of Canberrans whether it be for lifelong learning or entertainment,” Ms Little said.
She said reading was the perfect leisure activity to turn to all throughout the year, including during the holidays.
“I encourage all Canberrans to visit their local library and discover the many resources on offer.
“Members can access music downloads, eBooks, digital magazines and newspapers, eAudio books and much more.”
