Libraries ACT has teamed up with its Victorian counterpart, Public Libraries Victoria, to deliver a summer reading program for ACT kids.
In a statement, the Agency said people could take part in the Big Summer Read program through the Beanstack Tracker app where they would be able to track their progress and earn digital badges as rewards for reaching reading milestones.
“Research has identified a phenomenon known as the ‘summer slide’, which refers to the loss of literacy skills over the summer holidays when children do not read —estimated on average as the equivalent of two to three months of reading proficiency,” Libraries ACT said.
“Loss of reading proficiency is most acute in children from economically disadvantaged communities,” it said.
“The decline in learning gains is made worse by successive COVID lockdowns.”
Libraries ACT encouraged parents and carers to be their children’s literacy champions.
“Research tells us that when adults are part of a child’s reading journey, that influence can help them become lifelong learners,” it said.
“So join in, have fun and help keep your kids reading, playing, exploring and discovering with us this summer.”
The Agency said the Program, aimed at primary school-aged children, was running until 1 January and reading suggestions were available on its website.
