Satellite Observer
Job type: Full-time, Ongoing; Non-ongoing
Location: Yarragadee, WA
Salary: $79,125 to $86,246
Classification: APS Level 4
Position number: 14291
Security clearance: As required
Applications close: Sunday, 17 May
Agency website: https://www.ga.gov.au
Key duties: The Yarragadee Geodetic Observatory team is responsible for maintaining and operating all geodetic and geophysical equipment at the observatory.

The observatory operates equipment that collects important geodetic space data through various techniques such as satellite laser ranging (SLR). Using lasers to determine satellite position not only generates precise orbit determination for that satellite, but if the satellite’s orbit is already well defined and stable, the data can be used to accurately determine station: i.e. ground position and movement. These initiatives benefit the Australian public and international community, from maintaining an accurate International Terrestrial Reference Frame to informing Google Maps.

This role involves on-site operation of the NASA SLR system known as MOBLAS-5. The Satellite Observer will be responsible for data collection, using and maintaining all types of geodetic infrastructure at the observatory.

This role understands and administers the equipment and technology, including SLR, Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), Doppler Orbitography and Radio-positioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS) and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS).

The Satellite Observer role involves shift work, currently rostered as four 12-hour shifts across four days, then four days off. Shifts are am and pm, consisting of 3 am — 3 pm and 3 pm — 3 am, with both shifts attracting penalty rates and an additional 2.5 days’ leave, if 15 Sundays are worked in a year. As a team, we try to consistently accommodate shift preferences: i.e. am or pm, or slowly rotating. While we are currently offering multiple non-ongoing roles, ongoing roles may become available in the future and internal candidates will be encouraged to apply.
