A draft plan for Canberra’s urban lakes and ponds has gone on public exhibition, with the community asked to have their say on the future management of the city’s waterways.

In a statement, the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate (EPSDD) said Canberra’s urban lakes and ponds were a much-loved, iconic part of the Canberra landscape, valued for their beauty, recreational opportunities and environmental role.

“Each lake and pond is unique and is managed differently to reflect its different values, functions and needs,” EPSDD said.

It said the Draft Urban Lakes and Pond Land Management Plan covered all urban lakes and ponds except Lake Burley Griffin, which is managed by the National Capital Authority.

“We want your feedback on a new draft land management plan for all urban lakes and ponds (except Lake Burley Griffin),” the Directorate said.

It said the vision for Canberra’s urban waterways was to enrich local communities through the aesthetic, recreational, sporting, tourism, cultural and ecological values of lakes and ponds, and to provide opportunities for people to be involved in their use, care and management.

“All information received will be considered as we finish the management plan,” EPSDD said.

The community feedback period closes on 6 April, with a final plan scheduled to be released in August.
