Transport Canberra is to host a “Ladies Come and Try Day” this Saturday (11 August) to offer women the chance to try their hands at driving a bus under supervision.
The event will be held at the Sutton Road Training Centre in Majura in two sessions, 11.30 am to 1.30 pm and 2 pm to 4 pm, with a maximum of 50 attendees for each session.
Director of Public Transport Operations, Ian McGlinn said that, under the instruction of eight Transport Canberra Trainers/Assessors, attendees would have the opportunity to drive three different types of buses around a basic obstacle course.
“This will give the drivers an understanding of how easy it is to steer and manoeuvre a bus,” Mr McGlinn said.
“Next, attendees will be given the chance to drive around the 2.5-kilometre closed circuit track, which will provide insight into driving a bus at a relatively high speed.”
He said it will take 30 minutes for attendees to complete both activities.
Mr McGlinn said a number of existing female drivers would be in attendance to provide information and answer any questions relating to driving and working for Transport Canberra.
“Being a bus driver is more than simply getting passengers from A to B,” Mr McGlinn said.
“You’re keeping the local community on the move — work, school, the shops, a night out and countless other reasons are why our customers rely on our buses.”
He said Transport Canberra will be looking for casual bus drivers in the near future who exhibit a commitment to customer service and safety to meet the needs of the growing city.
Mr McGlinn said all participants must hold a current C-Class licence or above and, because of a safe weight rating of between 60 kg and 130 kg on the driver’s seat, participants must fall within this weight range.
Interested women can register their place via Eventbrite at this PS News link although the morning session is full.
